Schema Therapy

Struggling with relationship issues, depression, anxiety and/or a personality disorder? Schema therapy may be right for you.

Schema therapy combines theories and practices from cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), psychoanalysis, attachment theory and emotionally-focused therapy. You’ll work with your therapist to understand your schemas, break negative patterns of thinking/behaving and find positive ways to cope.

What are schemas?

Schemas (sometimes called early maladaptive schemas) are long-lasting and unhelpful patterns that usually develop when your 'core' emotional needs are not fulfilled in childhood. Some of these 'core' needs include:

  • feeling a sense of safety and attachment to others
  • freedom of self-expression
  • being able to play/be spontaneous
  • growing up in an environment where age-appropriate limits and boundaries were enforced

Maladaptive schemas developed in childhood - and the coping behaviours you developed as a young person to deal with them - can contribute to problematic coping methods and behaviours throughout life, if they aren’t addressed.
