7 Years Experience

Welcome to Joanne Parkes Counselling Service which provides a safe, professional and discreet environment where every person is recognised as being unique. My private therapy office is based in Biddulph, I offer varies types of counselling - fact to face, woodland therapy, telephone, zoom, whats-app and face-time appointments. You can develop the confidence to speak freely and openly without judgement, which allows you to look at how you have been feeling in more depth and in time, help you find your own solutions. Counselling can lead to an increased feeling of well-being, self-awareness, and confidence. It can lead you to a greater understanding, and acceptance of what may be challenging situations. I ensure that you are heard, and your needs are explored and met. Good therapy is all about the relationship, feeling safe and trusting the other person to hear you and not judge you, to accept you for who you are. They are authentic and real with you, while respecting boundaries. Once you experience this in a therapeutic relationship you can start to reveal, start to explore the parts of yourself in the shadows and move towards a more authentic fulfilling way of being.

My role as counsellor:-

Counselling can be an emotionally difficult process. Developing a trusting working relationship is the key to success and so my aim is to make you feel comfortable and safe. My role as a counsellor is not to give advice or tell you what to do. What I will do is listen to your concerns, help you explore coping mechanisms that work for you and look at finding new, more positive ways of thinking. The answers you are looking for are often already inside you, you may just simply need the space and encouragement to find them.
Although my core way of working is Person Centred approach I am flexible and I use approaches that suit my client’s personality or personal preferences. Other methods which I sometimes use are Solution Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness.

Face to Face Counselling:-
Giving you the opportunity to discuss, explore and express in confidence whatever may be going on for you with a trained and professional counsellor.

Online Counselling
Online Counselling is becoming an increasingly popular form of therapy. It can be as effective as face-to-face therapy with huge therapeutic benefits gained. It may be carried out through E-mail, Instant Messaging (Chat) or Webcam.
As with face to face counselling, clients may wish to have a number of sessions leading on from each other or they may have just one to try it out and give it a go.
Again, as with face to face counselling, online counselling may provide someone with the support they need at certain times in their life – perhaps when they are going through a difficult time and need to talk to someone, or perhaps they would like to explore and work through a difficult decision that has come up for them.
Online therapy allows you the flexibility of having sessions at a time and place to suit your needs. It is particularly helpful for those who might be housebound, who may feel anxious about face to face appointments or are simply too busy to attend face to face sessions
It can also be a great way into therapy to see if it suits you and would help you in your situation.
This could be more practically and financially feasible for you. You don’t have to travel long distances to see a therapist and it can fit around your time. This may especially suit people living in remote areas.

Woodland Therapy:-
Walk and talk therapy can be helpful for those people who find traditional counselling difficult. By walking together outdoors, both you and I will be journeying into something new together.

School Counselling:-
School counsellor supports the physical, mental health and emotional web-being of students. To enable students to process their problems and plan goals and actions.

Pre-Wedding Counselling:-
Pre-marriage counselling is a type of therapy that helps couples prepare for marriage, at the start of any relationship it is exciting and thrilling as you start to get to know each other and form a new life together.

Couples Therapy:-
All relationships have ups and downs, but sometimes they can get a bit stuck and it’s hard to talk things through or get to a positive solution. That’s when help from a skilled couple relationship counsellor can make all the difference.

What clients expect:-
If we agree to continue working together, we will meet usually on a weekly basis at the same time and day each week; however I understand that work/life commitments do not always allow for this and so can offer some flexibility. Each counselling session will last 50 mins and we will establish in our initial meeting whether you wish to work to a time limited contract (usually 6-12 sessions) or a longer term contract.

Throughout my work I have gained a lot of experience working with adults and young people going through a range of issues including: Stress, Bullying, Family Separation, Anxiety, Sexuality Abuse, Depression Gender, Self-esteem, Self Harm, Loss Confidence, Bereavement, Trauma, Anger, Loneliness, Isolation, Relationships, Affairs and Betrayals, Separation and Divorce, Suicidal Ideation, Eating Disorders, Health issues, Work related stress and Gender.

I am a qualified counsellor and registered member of the British Association for counselling, which means I work within the boundaries and standards of behaviour set by the BACP’s ethical framework. I hold a clean up to date enhanced DBS and professional indemnity and liability insurance which enable me to work anywhere.

"I felt that Joanne was a good therapist but was perhaps just not the right fit for me. She had lots of suggestions and tried to explain certain processes related to stress, but I felt like we were pushing for a solution. That might just be my own interpretation. Still, I got to talk about certain things which is always a good thing, and I feel like she did what she thought was best."

"Lovely and warm. "

"Very understanding and non-judgmental. I really appreciated her advise and plan to continue with the sessions."

"A pleasant introduction with some useful pointers at the end "

"Excellent communication and understanding. She listens to my needs and helped me come up with a small routine to break apart what is causing my issues. Also, she helped me understand myself and walk my through my mental state and being. "

"I would definitely recommend this service for people who feels as if they cannot trust people ."
