3 Years Experience

I'm a humanistic therapist meaning my specialism is the human experience. I am passionate about how the therapeutic relationship can facilitate insight and believe in the human capacity for change.

As a registered and qualified psychotherapist – I am informed by humanistic philosophy, Gestalt, Person-centred and TA theory. I believe every person has worth, the right to autonomy (to decide their own future) and that a person should feel safe and secure in order to explore their sense of self. If a person is provided with the right conditions for growth, they'll always move towards change. That’s why the therapeutic relationship is fundamental to psychotherapy success.

HOW DO I WORK?

I work with you to establish and maintain a relationship. Our relationships to others, to ourselves, our parents or caregivers has influenced our way of being in the world. The therapeutic relationship will be different to any other you’ve experienced. I encourage you to tell your story, in your words, at your pace. Together we’ll piece together the parts of your story and you’ll decide which parts you want to author and which parts you wish to change. I am fascinated by the stories people tell themselves, and of themselves, and the affect of interpersonal relationships - People’s stories connect their past to their present, helping them to reflect on what they do and why they do it.

I’ll offer you observations, not judgements.
Insight and awareness.
Psycho-health, not psychopathology.
A state of empathy, not pity.

I don’t believe you to be broken. You’re someone who is responding to the situation in the only way you know. Yet now, you’re wanting to evolve those coping mechanisms into something that serves you better.

I will make suggestions for your own personal growth - as I genuinely want you to succeed in life.

WHY WORK WITH ME?

Through the work we do together, you will begin to change and shift in ways you didn’t think possible, increasing your self-awareness with an understanding of your story and how you came to be you. Releasing the fear of expressing yourself or of hiding the aspects of you that cause pain or shame. Finding your voice within therapy so that you can use it in the wider world – in personal & professional relationships by asking for what you want & need in life.

I’ll help you cultivate curiosity around the potential that you hold – with no woo. Being a university educated psychotherapist with clinical experience within the NHS and an academic institution, my approach is grounded in evidence based research and blended with my theoretical knowledge. I tend to inform clients of my ‘stroke and a kick’ (Minuchin) attitude, which isn’t as painful as it might seem. What I mean by this is that I balance support of therapy with sufficient challenge to ensure that any stuckness you might be experiencing is understood so you can move forward. When we have a firm footing on where we are in life in the present, it means we can take the step forward into the future we’ve always known was possible.

Once our time has come to an end, we’ll work towards ending it in the healthiest way for you. Not on my timescales or preferences. The ending of a relationship is just as important as the beginning. And perhaps you’re someone who has had difficult endings – whether they be abrupt, ghosting or never really ending with anyone. Therapy is the opportunity to practice, play or try out new ways of being whilst knowing you’re in safe hands.

With all therapeutic work, I have an experienced supervisor to ensure I continue to excel with my professional standards and development.

"Honestly, I didn’t quite know what to expect. What was clear from the start though is that it is not possible to solve the “problem(s)” in 50 minutes.  I found that Joanne handled the session very well indeed. I felt seen and heard. I was a bit anxious that the questions would already go in where it really hurts... I’m glad that that hadn’t happened yet. With yet, I already acknowledge, that I am interested in carrying on. Best, Andreas "

"I came away from the session with a feeling of being heard and lots being reflected back that confirmed this. What was perhaps even more valuable was how various snippets of conversation revisited me for hours after. A kind of savouring that went beyond the time spent face to face with Jo. I would say that's a rather excellent session."

"My first therapy session ever in my life and found it very insightful and productive."

"Felt instantly comfortable & an instant liking to Jo. After trying another practice previously that didnt go well it was a relief to feel like there is a good chance I can have faith in Jo to help me work through my issues. The environment felt safe & calm and I feel optimistic about our next meeting. "
