4 Years Experience

Perhaps the most important aspect of all counselling is the rapport that is developed between the therapist and client; but with so many counsellors available how should you go about choosing one that is right for you?

My name is Anthony and I know from personal experience that the therapeutic relationship is paramount to effective treatment. That is why I spend a good deal of time during the first few sessions with a client on developing this relationship by opening up channels of communication that will put the client at ease and make them feel comfortable enough to express themselves. All counsellors should be non-judgmental and empathic towards their clients but I go further than this, I demonstrate to the client that I can be trusted; trusted to act ethically, professionally, congruently and compassionately. These are the personal values that I live by as well as cultivate within my practice. I see and treat all of my clients as individuals with their own identity and I respect this absolutely. I strongly believe that all people can develop the emotional and cognitive resilience to unburden themselves of self-destructive behaviours and negative thinking and I find it greatly rewarding to help people realise this for themselves.

During sessions I listen to what the client has to say and make sure they know they feel heard and understood. This is one of the fundamental building blocks of the therapeutic relationship and I take pride in my ability to really listen and give people the time they need to fully express their thoughts, feelings or situation. I do not give advice or tell people what they should or should not do as this contravenes the idea of autonomy and free will. Rather I help my clients find their own answers by effective listening, feedback, questioning and, if necessary, challenging them on their beliefs and attitudes. All of this is done in an ethical, professional, congruent, compassionate and empathic manner.

My aim with all of my clients is not simply that you “feel better” but that you develop and cultivate the personal qualities that you most value, in this way you will find ways to live that bring you fulfillment.

A seed that is planted takes time to grow and therapy is often not a quick process; it can be challenging and at times painful as together we explore the parts of yourself that are often suppressed or denied, but if the seed is nurtured with consistency and care then the outcome will be the personal growth that you desire.
