10 Years Experience

I am a clinical psychologist with a doctorate level of qualification in mental health. I trained for seven years to qualify and have worked in mental health related settings for 10 years. Clinical Psychology training involves a deep appreciation of issues across the life span and experience of working with children, families, working age adults, learning disabilities, and older adults. I have specialised in adult mental health by working in GP settings (IAPT, NHS), private practice (4 years), and both private and public mental health units (4 years).

In private practice I have focussed on the needs of business people and the stresses they face at work and the difficulties this poses for their private and family lives. I have worked with CEOs, sales managers, IT consultants, marketeers, lawyers, surgeons, and many other professions and have a strong grasp of the issues they face and the most beneficial approaches.

My approach is to explore the nature of the current issues, their origin and maintenance factors, and tailor an approach drawing from the most relevant evidence based methods. My general therapeutic approach is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and I have also completed a post-graduate diploma in this area. However, as a clinical psychologist, I favour an integrated approach drawing from psychodynamic, systemic, mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Schema Focussed Therapy (SFT).

I also believe that no matter how complex one's situation may seem that simple strategies, carefully formulated and supported, in a step-by-step approach, can lead to rapid and lasting benefits. In basic terms I believe that effective therapy empowers people to help themselves and self-manage.

"Sought psychological therapy intervention after some issues around anxiety and depression, that in turn impacted on aspects of life. Needed help in working out what was happening and how to best deal with issues. After reviewing a number of profiles on this platform, I chose Dr Gillan, a registered clinical psychologist from my shortlist. I am grateful to him for treating my approach with the utmost sensitivity and for carefully and professionally helping me to understand what was going on and more importantly, how to improve the situation. It's never easy to discuss such issues openly but Dr. Gillan was absolutely discreet and non-judgemental and took a genuine interest in helping me to get back on track. Appreciate too the accurate and helpful follow up session reports as part of his intervention. Highly recommended. "
