"Finding a counsellor who is going to 'get you' and the issues and challenges you face can be daunting," says Cardiff based Harley Therapy Platform therapist Nick Shepley. "The wide range of different therapists and therapies can be bewildering, especially if you're feeling unsure. I know the answers to your problems are within you and together we will work to find them."

Nick is a skilled, person-centred therapist who treats a range of issues including addiction, anger, depression and anxiety. Get to know Nick below as we 'Meet the Therapist.'

What do you enjoy about your work?

Being able to form a deep empathic bond with a client based on trust and positive regard, where as a therapist I get the privilege of seeing the world as someone else sees it is what makes the role of counsellor for me. Being able to help with another's suffering and explore how that person accesses all the personal power they have to solve their own problems is something that few other roles offer.

Why do you think therapy is important?

Erich Fromm said most people go through life being strangers to themselves. I believe that one of the most urgent tasks of living is to know ones self and therapy is a way to achieve that (though it is a life long process). Much of the suffering of the world is caused by this alienation from ones self and in my line of work - addictions therapy - most addicts choose drugs or harmful behaviours because they have yet to really take that journey within to know themselves.

What is your favourite self help book and why?

'The Art of Loving' by the aforementioned Erich Fromm. It is a simple beautiful treatise on how to be a loving human being. It reminds us that love is hard work sometimes and being loving takes practice.

Favourite quote and who is it from?

'A thing which has not been understood inevitably reappears; like an unlaid ghost, it cannot rest until the mystery has been solved and the spell broken.' Sigmund Freud.

What are your own wellbeing habits?

Daily meditation has made an immense difference to my life in the last ten years.
